Canada Revamps International Student Program: Streamlining Support and Strengthening Standards

Canada's world-renowned education system, diverse communities, and potential pathway to permanent residency make it a magnet for international students. Yet, some face challenges, particularly with housing and financial preparedness. Today, Minister Marc Miller announced comprehensive reforms to the International Student Program, prioritizing student well-being and program integrity.

Canada Study Visa 2024: Investing in Student Success

Effective January 1, 2024, the cost-of-living requirement for study permits will significantly increase, reflecting the current realities of life in Canada. This "Canada International Students Rule 2024" ensures students arrive with sufficient funds, avoiding financial vulnerability and exploitation. The new threshold, pegged at 75% of the low-income cut-off (LICO) and adjusted annually, represents a significant leap from the outdated $10,000 set decades ago. For a single applicant in 2024, this translates to $20,635, in addition to tuition and travel costs.

Recognizing the impact this change might have on underrepresented groups, targeted pilot programs will launch next year to support their access to Canadian education. This aligns with the October 2023 reforms, which established a framework to recognize institutions providing top-quality services like housing to international students. By September 2024, institutions exceeding their capacity may face visa limitations, ensuring all students receive adequate support.

Policy Updates Supporting Students:

Alongside these long-term changes, Minister Miller provided crucial updates on temporary policies expiring at the end of 2023:

Off-campus work: Until April 30, 2024, international students can work beyond the 20-hour-per-week limit. Future options, including expanding this to 30 hours, are being explored.

Online study and work permits: For programs beginning before September 1, 2024, online study counts towards the post-graduation work permit eligibility if it constitutes less than 50% of the program.

Additional post-graduation work permit: This program, introduced to address pandemic-related disruptions, will not be extended beyond December 31, 2023. Eligible students whose initial work permits expire by then can still apply for the additional 18 months.
